Tara Mulhall
Tara competed in the 2023 Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition with a project that used machine learning to forecast a person’s political leaning from their social media profiles. She also exhibited an AI art generator that produced new images in the style of her existing paintings. Tara won first place in the Senior Individual category and received the Rev. Dr. Tom Burke Bursary.
Afterward, she joined the youth accelerator Patch, where she developed Parky, an autonomous robot that detects badly parked cars using machine vision. She went on to present her work to senior leaders at OpenAI.
Today, Tara is studying mechatronic engineering at The University of Manchester. She was the first female project lead at the university’s robot society, where she built a Rubik’s Cube-solving robot. She has also completed an engineering internship at Siemens, where software she developed for trains has been deployed globally.
Tara’s advice to Stripe YSTE participants? “Don’t pick a project because it did well last year. You’ll stand out if you do your own unique thing—something you’re genuinely interested in.”
